In this seminar, we will explore the scientific information cycle from retrieving over managing to disseminating scientific information in the form of research articles, preprints or research data.

The following questions will be addressed in the seminar:
  • How can I find the relevant literature on my research question in multidisciplinary and subject-specific databases?
  • How is scientific information efficiently managed?
  • How does AI impact the search and production of scientific information?
  • How does the publication market work and what are the current challenges?
  • What measures have to be taken to fulfil the principles of good scientific practice in scholarly publishing?
  • What is the idea of Open Science and where are we currently standing in this regard?
  • What metrics are applied to assess researchers, research output and universities and why are they problematic?
  • What are the impacts of research on society?
Note that the course will not cover the topic of scientific writing.
 
With the knowledge acquired in this course participants are able to:
  • Make a justified choice of appropriate information sources
  • Construct and implement effective search strategies
  • Organise and store information using appropriate methods and share information with others
  • Legally obtain, cite and disseminate scientific information
  • Describe methods to measure the impact of a scientist and form an opinion about the research performance evaluation
  • Understand dissemination of scientific publications, problems in the current publication system and ways to find journals for publication
  • Know the various models for Open Access, how to publish with Open Access and which pitfalls to avoid
PhD candidates in the natural, medical and social sciences.
This course is primarily aimed at PhD beginners.

Assessment: Preparation of a short talk on one of the topics and presentation within the course

1 ECTS (has to be recognized by your faculty)

  • A no-show will lead to a blocked account and the cancellation of all other booked GRC courses.
